What is AIB (Asbestos Insulating Board?)
Asbestos insulating board was used in factories, schools, homes and offices across Northern Ireland. It was mostly amosite and crysolite asbestos used as:
- Fireproofing panels
- soffits
- window panels
- ceiling tiles
- partition walls
- Roof light uplifts
- Bath panels
- and many more no doubt!
How Dangerous is AIB?
It is recommended not to work on asbestos containing materials unless trained. Work to remove AIB is generally notifiable. Certain criteria should be adhered to. See the HSE website for more information or contact your local council if you are unsure. You can also contact the Health & Safety Executive in Northern Ireland.
AIB can be confused with other materials such as plasterboard or wood panels as they may have been painted over, papered over and covered in other ways. Asbestos insulating boards may have been used in a situation where you wouldn’t expect to find asbestos. For example doors you would normally expect to be made from wood, in some situations may be lined with asbestos for fireproofing purposes. Such dangers are can catch out even the most experienced tradesmen and women.
An asbestos survey is always recommended before carrying out any refurbishment works.
